WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A local childcare center is using recycled products to teach students about the world around them.

Young children at the AAI Pharma Services Learning Center Wilmington are learning how to recycle while expressing their creativity.

Discarded paper towel rolls, extra shirt buttons, outdated computers, old garden hoses and rusty metal bolts are no longer items wasting space in garbage cans, garages and closets. The children find ways to turn them into beautiful works of art.

Denise Ward, one of the directors of the center, say this is a great way for children to learn about what interests them while being green and cleaning up the environment.

"We thought it would be such an easy thing to incorporate into every day art because there are so many things that we throw away ever day that children can make something beautiful out of," said Ward.

With the help of the educational leadership department at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), the early childhood learning center developed the Recycled Arts Center Project that launched in August.

This child-based learning model begins with the teachers listening and observing the children, and then building the curriculum around the youngsters' interests. In the classroom, the children, teacher or both ask questions about a particular topic, finding answers through investigations, explorations, activities and field trips.

AAI Pharma Learning Center is located at 2320 Scientific Park Drive in Wilmington. For more information, call 910-254-7385
