Seven-year-old saves family from house fire

What a day at school for seven-year-old Nathaniel Cutting. The second grader got to take pictures with firefighters -- his heroes.

But best of all, they're calling him a hero, too.

At a school assembly, local leaders in Tucson, Ariz. presented Nathaniel with the Tucson Hero Award for helping to save his family from a house fire.

"I woke up to the smoke alarm," said Nathaniel. "I went to wake everyone up and I just brought them outside."

It was late at night when flames sparked up from an unattended candle in Nathaniel's bedroom.

But instead of feeling panicked, Nathaniel felt prepared. He remembered all the fire drills and lessons from class.

"I just learned in school," he said. "I pay attention."

"He didn't panic. He didn't run around. He didn't go back to sleep. He woke up the rest of his family so they were able to get out of their house," Steele Elementary Principal Lisa Thomas explained to Nathaniel's classmates. "That was a pretty smart choice, wasn't it?"

Such a smart choice, in fact, that Nathaniel could make a career out of it. He already knows what he wants to be when he grows up.

"Someone who saves people from fire," he said.

"I think it's terrific that he wants to do that," added Tucson Fire Chief Jim Critchley. "I'd welcome him aboard!"
