PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Pender County Sheriff's Office is expected to start a new contract to bring mental health service improvements to the jail.

Carson Smith told commissioners that inmates, especially those who are suicidal, need consultations with physicians.

The proposed contract would allow counseling sessions to happen via video technology and through physician visits.

Commissioners voted Tuesday night to authorize the contract between the Sheriff's Office and Correctional Behavioral Health.  It will cost a flat rate of $1,200 a month.
