WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – You can get your money back for something you bought years ago just for keeping up with the news.
Sometimes a little good can come from something bad—take class action lawsuits, for example. It's kind of odd, but occasionally, you can get money back for the things you bought because someone else made a stink about the product. It can be controversial depending on your beliefs or intentions, but the money is there for you to take. If you believe in the lawsuit and fit the criteria, then companies make it easy for you to get your money back.
Recently, Nutella has been in the news over a class action lawsuit. One mom in California sued because she basically thought Nutella shouldn't advertise itself as a healthy choice for kids.
So, now the company is paying out $2.5 million to its consumers. That means you can get reimbursed for up to 5 jars of Nutella from now until early July 2012. The lawsuit states that if you bought Nutella between 2008 and 2012, you could be reimbursed, depending on where you live.
Some people may argue that filing a claim like this is what hurts businesses. Others make the point that companies should not be able to get away with being untruthful in their ads.
The bottom line is this – if you're already spending the money, believe in the lawsuit and fit the criteria, at least you can make a consideration of what to do. I'm not telling you what to do – just giving you the knowledge to decide.
A good way to find out about class action lawsuits is to watch the news and read consumer blogs. Michelle Li likes to read The Consumerist on a regular basis.
