SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Movie executives with the film Safe Haven have been eyeing up Southport for film production for quite some time, according to sources.

WECT.com is told that an office is already set up in the area and producers have expressed a strong interest in filming. They've visited restaurants and businesses and have talked with locals on their vision for the film.

A source confirmed that those working on the movie have reached out to businesses in hopes of getting more floats for this year's Fourth of July parade. They plan to feature those floats in the film.

While no official word has been announced on when filming will begin, sources say it could be made sometime in the near future.

A spokeswoman with the Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce said this is great news for the region.

There's a contest being held by the movie production, according to members of the chamber of commerce.

The best five floats will have an extra part in movie, and the best float gets $1,000 dollars to be used towards a charity of the winner's choice. As a result, the chamber says a lot of non-profit groups are excited.

They have high hopes it will boost business in the area, attract more people and help put the beach region on the map.

Safe Haven is the film adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel about a widower from Southport.

Business owners say they've heard that filming will begin at the end of May and will continue throughout the summer.

Johnna Julot is ready to see some lights, some cameras and lots of action. Julot owns Four Legs Good, a local business.

"Lots of talking, lots of buzz," she said. "Everyone is very excited, and we have our eyes wide open waiting for the cameras to start rolling."

Janet Bronstein and her husband are vacationing for the first time in Southport from Alabama, and say if the plans go through for filming, they will be back for a second trip.

"Just because, who gets to see them make a movie? Unless you live in L.A.

Julot agrees, and hopes her shop gets its five minutes of fame.

"I would be ecstatic to have my store on the big screen, and it would be something that is recorded, so I could go back and look at it and say there we are…we were there," said Julot.

Reports say Keira Knightley will star in the movie.
