NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WECT) – Two major projects are about to overlap and local leaders are making sure that neither of the two will negatively affect the other.

The Burnt Mill Creek improvement project is older than the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority itself, and the project is a priority for the CFPUA. Spokesperson Carey Ricks said the authority found several emergency needs when the CFPUA was first formed.

As important as the work might be, there's a bigger name coming to town that has the CFPUA cooperating with EUE/Screen Gems Studios. When Iron Man 3 begins filming, the studio does not want the vibrations and noise from construction to be a problem, according to City Council member and CFPUA board member Neil Anderson.

Anderson said Mayor Bill Saffo, who sits on the Wilmington Regional Film Commission board, expressed concerns about open communication between the two groups. A CFPUA board meeting Wednesday proved that both organizations are working together, according to Anderson.

"There's no cause for alarm," said Anderson. "This isn't ‘Oh, Iron Man's going to be stopped by the authority. The plan is quite the opposite."

The Burnt Mill Creek project is so large that crews will be redirected to other sites while the movie is made, according to Ricks. With so many pipes and manhole covers that need replaced, Ricks said the project is still a priority.

"We will carefully monitor this because it's so vulnerable," said Ricks.

Iron Man 3 is considered the largest feature film to be made in North Carolina to date.
