Money in a Minute: Rain checks are a girl's best friend
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - If you see a great deal in the newspaper, chances are the item will be gone by the time you get to the store, right? Wrong. Getting a rain check could almost guarantee you'll get what you want.
A rain check is simply a special piece of paper that allows you to buy something at a later date. Smart shoppers use it when an item is on sale but is also out of stock. Some couponers joke that a rain check is their BFF.
People complain to me all the time, "Michelle, I can't get the deal because there were no more left." But nothing is further from the truth. All you have to do is walk up to customer service, tell them you want a rain check for a specific item, and most stores will write one up for you.
It depends on the store, but often rain checks don't expire, and that means if you've got an active coupon, you can essentially make your own sale down the road.
This is the one of the best tips I know, and every smart shopper I know takes advantage of the rain check.
Again, make sure you check with your store to see their policy on rain checks. By the way, by law the store has to issue you a rain check if it doesn't specify that there's limited stock or no rain checks available.
