SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – Despite crummy weather conditions and the fact that it's August, thousands of people gathered in Southport to celebrate the Fourth of July…again.

Film crews for Safe Haven spent the day on the streets of Southport, trying to recreate the annual festivities. About 3,000 people flocked to the area in hopes of making it to the silver screen, and some of the film's castmembers were present, along with author Nicholas Sparks.

Most extras are from the area, but some drove in from around the coast. Chelsea Meyers said she drove 11 hours from New Jersey to take part in the filming action, because she loves the book and is a fan of Nicholas Sparks.

Extras were decked out in their red, white and blue to show their American pride and didn't seem to mind the fact that it was raining.

Production crews ran through the parade several times, so everyone got a chance to see the floats.

The annual Southport Parade draws in roughly 40,000-50,000 each year. The parade began in 1964, but has roots dating back to the 1700s.

If you missed out on the filming today, there will still be opportunities to be an extra for the Nicholas Sparks novel adaptation. Those interested are advised to keep an eye on the casting Facebook page for Safe Haven for more details regarding the dates and times of various shoots.
