NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The state of North Carolina will seek the death penalty for a man accused of murdering a 24-year-old woman earlier this year.

Andrew Bernard Adams is facing first-degree murder charges for the death of Latricia Ana Scott. Her body was found in the backyard of a home on Cowan Street in January.

Scott's family was in the courtroom Thursday for the Rule 24 Hearing that determined the state's decision to seek the death penalty. The family said they are still in the grieving process and did not want to speak to the media.

The state went after the death penalty in the Gerard Altman case, which dates back to 2009. According to the DA's office, Altman pleaded guilty and received two consecutive life sentences to avoid the death penalty.

The DA's office also went after the death penalty in the murder case involving Paul Cummings. He received the death penalty in September 2004.

Most recently, the state announced Tuesday it will seek the death penalty against Cornell Haugabook for the murder of Zhen Bo Liu. Liu was the Chinese delivery driver killed while on the job in June.

The judge ordered Adams to end any contact with the family. Adams allegedly sent a letter to Scott's sister from jail.

According to Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous, Adams has a criminal record that includes rape and sex crimes against children.

Adams is currently facing rape and murder charges from a cold case in New Bern.
