WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -  A man who was bitten by a dog at Hugh MacRae Park will not have to receive the rabies vaccination, because the owner of the dog that bit him was located thanks to our report.

Tim Burleson was bitten two weeks ago at the park while trying to pull his dog away from a fight with another dog.

He was in a rush to get to the hospital and did not exchange contact information with the owner of the other dog.

Animal Control and the Health Department told Burleson he would have to get vaccinated for rabies, if they couldn't confirm that the dog did not have rabies. Last week, we highlighted his search for the owner of the dog in our newscasts and online at

Tim's wife, Tammy, tells that they received a call over the weekend from the mother-in-law of the woman who owns the dog. She saw the story on WECT. When she spoke to her son, she asked if their golden retriever, Buddy, bit anyone lately. He told her that the dog actually did bite someone at the park. She informed him that the man who was bitten was looking for them, in an effort to avoid having to get the rabies vaccination. They contacted Animal Control and officers who observed the dog determined that Buddy did not have rabies. Therefore, Burleson will not have to get a vaccine for rabies, which can be expensive and painful.

Tammy thanked WECT for our story, crediting our coverage for helping to locate the dog's owners. Tim was scheduled to start treatment; they are relieved that he won't have to undergo a round of rabies shots.
