BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Brunswick County has to pick
up the tab on some medical services from the jail because of an "administrative
error," according to the county manager.
Commissioners voted at Monday night's meeting to approve
using about $87,000 from the county's general fund to pay off the debt.
The county manager told WECT.com that they received a bill last
week from Transform Health, but the bill was pertaining to services from last
year.
Transform Health is the medical provider for the Brunswick
County Detention Center. The group apparently billed the county late for fees
and services from last year and now the county has to dig into this year's
budget to pay it.
County manager Marty Lawing said had the county received the
bill last year they would have been able to pay it.
Transform Health handles the medical services inside the
jail and covers up to $75,000 worth of services. Any bills beyond that point
are then billed to the county.
Commissioners are expected to meet this week to get a better
understanding of where the mistake was made.
