Accident spills logs across Highway 17 North, closing the road for hours

LELAND, NC (WECT) – An accident between a log truck and a car on Highway 17 North at the entrance of Brunswick Forest is renewing neighbors' calls for the speed limit to reduced on the road.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. and left the northbound lanes closed for hours, as crews cleared logs that spilled onto the road.

Highway Patrol troopers said traffic was slowing to a stop at the red light but the tractor trailer couldn't slow down fast enough; it slammed into a car at the intersection.

Carl Hall, 74, from Leland, was transported to the hospital with a head injury. Troopers believed his injuries were not life-threatening.

The driver of the 18-wheeler, Anthony Murphy, 21, from Watha, has been cited with failure to reduce speed.

Neighbors are calling for the speed limit to be lowered in the area.

Bob Corriston, who lives in Brunswick Forest and is on the Leland Planning Board, said he petitioned the state to lower the speed limit from 55 to 45 miles per hour.

He said the North Carolina Department of Transportation rejected his request.

He's hoping after this wreck, the state will reconsider.

"Someone is going to get killed here," he said. "The proof is in the accidents that have happened here, especially like this one you see right here."
