University officials said they are looking for ways to help alleviate traffic on campus.
WILMINGTON, NC (WEC) –
Students at UNCW are looking for some safe solutions to a problematic area of
campus.
With thousands of students
on campus, it is not hard to get lost in the crowd. New statistics released by
UNCW police show some students could be in the way of danger.
UNCW Police released the
number of reported accidents involving cyclists, pedestrians and drivers. From
July 2011 to June 2012, only three accidents were reported to police, but so
far this year they've already received three reports of accidents.
Students were surprised to
hear the total number of crashes reported last year has already been matched
this year.
"That's pretty intense,"
said James Pinley, a student at UNCW. "Something needs to be done about that."
One of the worst areas for
accidents is Chancellor's Walk, according to university officials and students.
Students told WECT.com
they don't report many of the accidents that do happen because they know not
much can be done about it.
Officials suggested
students be more aware of their surroundings, always cross at a crosswalk, obey
pedestrian signals and make sure to stay alert while walking from class to
class.
University police officers
said they will have officers patrolling campus to help regulate the traffic
flow.
