HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF/WECT) - Crews with the United States Coast Guard escorted a fishing boat back into its dock in Calabash after the engine caught fire with several people on board.
The 75 foot charter boat, the West Wind, had approximately 40 passengers on board, according to Coast Guard officials.
It was over 10 miles offshore from Little River when the rescue crews were dispatched from the Georgetown Coast Guard station.
The charter boat reported a fire in the engine room around 5:25 p.m., and the US Coast Guard sent a helicopter and several small boats to their aid, but the fire was put out before they arrived.
The boat is functional and made its way back to its home port, which is in Calabash, with a United States Coast Guard escort.
Coast Guard officials could not comment on what sparked the fire, but added that no one was injured.
The Coast Guard urges all boaters to carry the proper lifesaving and firefighting equipment at all times in case of emergencies.
