New York, NY (PRWEB) October 07, 2012
It's the New York Yankees against the Baltimore Orioles at the opening of the American League Division Series at Oriole Park, Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland this Sunday. The Yankees are staking their claim at their 28th World Series title, but the Orioles – back in postseason for the first time since 1997 – are ready to put up one big fight.
The Yankees are driven by their offense. This year they belted a major league-high of 245 home runs. Their star player is second baseman Robinson Cano, who is said to be the hottest hitter in baseball to enter the play offs. Another superstar in the Yankees' lineup are Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, and Nick Swisher. Ichiro Suzuki is also making his presence known in the Yankees' lineup after the team acquired him from the Seattle Mariners in August. Ichiro batted .322 which is 61 points higher than he hit in 95 games with the Mariners. And last but not the least is Alex Rodriguez. This three-time AL MVP sat out a few months because of an injury, but he did hit .272 with 18 home runs and 57 RBI.
If you're impressed by the Yankees' line up, you will even be more pleased with the Orioles' bullpen. The team is led by its closer Jim Johnson. He led the majors with a team-record of 51 saves. Sidewinding Darren O'Day serves as the team's main setup player and gives mean right-handed hitters fits. Lefty Brian Matusz is also a force to be reckoned with and he has proven what he can do come crunch time. Returning from months-long hiatus is right-hander Jason Hammel. He was the top pitcher of the Orioles in the first half of the season, but had to be taken out because of a knee injury.
For their offensive play, the Orioles are being led by Adam Jones and Matt Wieters.
The two giants - the Orioles and Yankees – have crossed paths more than once in their illustrious careers. Besides the regular season meetings, the Yankees and the Orioles have faced each other in the 1996 ALCS. The series was won by New York in six games.
This best of five games will see the Yankees and the Orioles playing the first two games in Baltimore and the remaining games at the Yankee Stadium in New York. Yankees fans are saying that there won't be a need for games 4 and 5. If you're an Orioles fan, watch the games to see if it is indeed time for a comeback.
The match ups for the 2012 ALDS are:
(1) New York Yankees (East Division champions, 95–67) vs. (4) Baltimore Orioles (Wild Card playoff winner, 93–69)
(2) Oakland Athletics (West Division champions, 94–68) vs. (3) Detroit Tigers (Central Division champions, 88–74)
