CHARLOTTE, NC (WECT) – Some North Carolinians are petitioning driver licenses for undocumented residents.

Jesus Ministry out of Charlotte has been working on a project to allow the eight percent of the population that represent undocumented residents to acquire a driver's license.

According to a press release, these undocumented residents drive to school, church work and other places of interest and do not possess a valid document to operate a vehicle.

More than 6,000 citizens signed petitions to request licenses for those undocumented in the state.

Jesus Ministry and their supporters believe that issuing licenses to the undocumented will aid the state in the efforts of homeland security, economic recovery, job creation, public safety, crime prevention and safer roads.

Local attorneys agree with the message.

"There's no way for us to physically deport all of them if we wanted to tomorrow," said local immigration attorney Helen Jugovic. "That means when we have people driving without licenses those individuals don't have insurance, we have uninsured motorist problems, you have problems regulating the highways and problems regulating local streets."

There are about 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the US, according to Jugovic.
