PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - More than 100 third graders in Pender County got a special life lesson Friday.
As part of Fire Prevention Week, volunteer firefighters set up shop at Cape Fear Elementary School in Rocky Point, teaching students what to do if there is a fire in their home.
Kids got to tour the truck, use a fire hose and even practice jumping out window when a home fills with smoke.
"Kids can be scared of the firefighters…they are dressed up in their turnout gear and their suits, they don't look like me and you," said Tommy Batson, Pender County Deputy Fire Marshal. "They are in a large costume, and it is big and bulky, loud and noisy, and young children will be scared of them, so we are here to educate them and explain to them we are here to help you and protect you"
Firefighters have been visiting schools all week.
