Auburn beaten in close game against Vandy, 17-13

The Auburn Tigers fought a close game against the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday, but found themselves coming up short in the contest.

Vanderbilt found the opportunity to score on their first possession. A 16-play drive covered 75 yards for the Commodores and included a gamble on 4th and 2 at the Auburn 14. The touchdown was made by a Wesley Tate 7-yard rush at the 6:36 mark in the 1st quarter. Carey Spear kicked the extra point.

Auburn started their scoring in the 2nd quarter. After an 8-play drive, the Tigers found themselves at 4th and goal at the Vanderbilt 10-yard line. Cody Parkey successfully kicked the 27-yard field goal. Not content with just a kick, Auburn added a touchdown with 1:21 remaining in the half. After Vanderbilt downed at the Auburn 48, the Tigers used to momentum to score within 5 plays.Tre Mason capped off the drive with a 1-yard rush. Cody Parkey's kick set the Auburn lead at 10-7.

The lead did not last for Auburn. Vanderbilt took the remaining time and pressed down to the Auburn 13, but found themselves facing 4th and 1. Commodore Carey Spear kicked the field goal to tie up the game at 10 with no time left in the half.

The Commodores regained the lead in the 3rd quarter at the 10:30 mark. Following a 7-play drive for 85 yards with Zac Stacy rushes being instrumental in moving the ball, Stacy grabbed the touchdown with a 2-yard rush. Ryan Fowler kicked the extra point for a 17-10 score.

Auburn looked to close the gap, but found themselves caught at 4th and 7 on the Vandy 21. Cody Parkey was called on the field and the score was shifted to 17-13 with a little less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. N
ew life was brought to the game when Vanderbilt fumbled near the Auburn 32 yard line. A few passes put them into Vanderbilt territory. With 57 seconds remaining, the Tigers found themselves at 4th and 13 at the Vanderbilt 44. A long pass to Sammie Coates went incomplete and Vanderbilt took the win.

Next week, Auburn returns home to take on Texas A&M. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
