RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – Walter Dalton today received the editorial endorsement of one of North Carolina's largest newspapers, the News & Observer in Raleigh. The announcement came following Wednesday night's third televised debate of the campaign between Dalton and Pat McCrory.

The newspaper said in its Thursday morning edition "Of these two candidates for the governorship, we think Dalton has more of what it takes to lead North Carolina in the right direction, toward more opportunity and prosperity for all of its people."

The editorial cited its endorsement of McCrory in the 2008 gubernatorial campaign against then-Lieutenant Governor Beverly Perdue, which was a first for a Republican candidate running for the office. Part of the endorsement at that time, according to today's article, was that McCrory "seemed well-suited to counterbalance a Democratic General Assembly whose leaders had grown presumptuous with their power, in some cases illegally so, and because his call for a fresh approach to governing struck a chord."

The article continued with "This year, the 2008 situation has been turned on its head. McCrory as governor would almost certainly be working with a legislature firmly in GOP hands. The odds of a checks-and-balances dynamic would be minimal."

"When you take a detailed look at both candidate's records and plans to create jobs and move North Carolina forward, Walter Dalton is the clear choice for governor," Ford Porter, a Dalton spokesman said in an e-mail statement. "We're proud to have the support of the News & Observer. Despite endorsing Mayor McCrory in the past, they recognized that he is now out of touch with the needs of working families in North Carolina."

The endorsement brought this comment from the McCrory campaign. "Pat is pleased to have the endorsements of the Asheville Citizen Times, the Winston Salem Journal and the Greenville Daily Reflector," said McCrory spokesman Ricky Diaz. "But it's voters - not newspapers - that Pat is targeting with his positive message and he's pleased that every recent poll in the last month shows him leading by double digits.
