An action packed Saturday at the Darton soccer complex saw the Lady Cavs' soccer team upset 10th ranked Georgia Perimeter 4-0 to win its second straight GCAA title and earn a trip back to the national tournament. Georgia Perimeter came into the game having beaten Darton twice this season.
The scoring started a few minutes in when Deanna Reali pushed the ball ahead to Chihiro Hiking who had a two-on-one with the Perimeter keeper. Hiking beat the keeper to her right side to make the score 1-0. Midway through the first half, the Lady Cavs got on the board again when Laura Nelson found herself alone with the goalie after a Perimeter mishandle. Nelson buried the shot to make it 2-0. Both Shenika Williams and Kim Treutel added insurance goals in the 4-0 victory.
The win makes it back to back region championships for the Darton women. It was head coach Ken Veiland's 12th appearance in the region championship in 13 seasons as Darton's head coach.
Veilands said "I think we spent the season trying to grow and develop knowing tournament time is going to be back to back and being able to play two games in a row and how difficult it was going to be. I think we worked the players on the bench all season long to get them ready for that. We talked about it. We took our lumps and a few loses but the talent was there and we knew it was just getting the pieces in the right place"
Treutel said "Each day you know our coach after every game we would have a hard practice to prepare for the region tournament and as much as we hated it everybody pushed through it. Nobody complained and it worked."
Meanwhile, the Darton men's team beat Wallace St. 1-0 to advance to the region championship against South Georgia College at 2:00 p.m. at the Darton Soccer Complex.
