WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – According to the State Board of Elections, Rep. Mike McIntyre has defeated David Rouzer in the 7th District Congressional race.

"Today, counties across the 7th Congressional district finished the canvassing process and have made their results official," read a release from the McIntyre campaign.

The SBOE had the final tally as McIntyre receiving 168,697 votes to his Rouzer's 168,042 votes, a margin of 655. That lead grew from the 517 McIntyre had following the vote count on election day. The incumbent Democrat from Lumberton is currently serving his 8th term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In the news release, McIntyre released the following statement:

"I'm honored that the voters of eastern North Carolina have put their trust in me to represent them in Washington. I thank them for their confidence and pledge to continue to put their interests first.

Our country faces many challenges and we need less partisan rhetoric and more cooperation in Washington. I will continue my work to lower the deficit, cut government spending and red tape so small businesses can flourish and we can create more jobs."

Rouzer's campaign has not released a comment on the results, saying only that the state senator from Johnston County would have a statement early next week.

Since the margin between McIntyre and Rouzer is within one percent, the challenger does have the right to request a runoff. Rouzer must file the request with the State Board of Elections by Tuesday.
