LELAND, NC (WECT) - The sound of song filled the room and candles illuminated the sanctuary at First Baptist Church in Leland.
Hundreds of community members came together Friday night to celebrate and remember the lives of loved ones who died.
The ceremony is a tradition that Birdie Frink started 18 years ago when her daughter was murdered. Since then, she has used her experiences to inspire and motivate other victims of violence.
"If I can inspire just one person, my goal is to motivate just one person, or light just one more candle, that's my goal," said Frink.
But next year, there will be a new organizer. Birdie Frink says that she's come to a point in her life where she's just not physically able to be the full time organizer anymore.
Neighbors say throughout the years, Frink has touched the lives of everyone in the community.
Frink says next year, someone else will take over the responsibility of organizing the event, but she added that she would be willing to help out any way she can.
