Program donates laptops to students in the community

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – There's a common assumption that all students are wired, but you may be surprised by the number of students who do not have access to technology at home.

The Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce has started a program to donate laptops to deserving students in the community.

Students with an active lifestyle – sports, clubs, volunteering -- have to squeeze in homework whenever they can. Often times, they'll do their work in the early morning before school starts. Having a laptop to carry around with them makes it easier to keep track of assignments so a busy schedule doesn't lead to missed work.

"I had to rush to school to get to school to try to get my work done," said junior Felecity Havens. "I'd go to the library before school started."

It can be tough to make time for all the work even when students are at home, and a simple solution is not always an affordable one. Students who have received a laptop from this program say having the technology really changed their lives.

"I actually take it with me wherever I go - always have that option," said senior Jordan Clemmer.

With so many students taking online classes these days, having the laptops allows them to do their work anywhere, whether it's at home or on the go.

"So many of our students are taking online classes and this enables them to extend that beyond the walls of Ashley high school, so we really appreciate all that effort and work from the chamber for what it's given to our students," said Vickie Bayliss, the Career and Tech Facilitator at Ashley High School.

So far, the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce has donated 20 laptops to 20 smiling students.

If you get a new laptop for Christmas, consider donating your old technology to this program. The Chamber of Commerce wipes all hard drives clean before passing the computers on to students, so security shouldn't be an issue.
