SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) –  The recount of votes in the District 7 Congressional race between Mike McIntyre and David Rouzer cost taxpayers at least $18,000, according to figures from the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

The twelve-county recount on November 26-28 verified McIntyre's victory over Rouzer in the general election. McIntyre lost one vote in the process, winning a ninth term in Congress by 654 votes out of more than 336,000 cast in the race.

Elections officials put the recount cost at $18,096, with only Robeson County not reporting a total cost.

Johnston County saw the highest cost for a recount at $4,500. The total for New Hanover County came in at $3,275 with the following explanation: "the costs associated to employing temporary labor, contract support and equipment rental for nine hours of counting. Does not include any preparatory hours for temporary labor prior to recount date or any hours associated with the Board or full-time staff."

The explanation for Pender County's cost of $355 is written as $225 for paying the Board (of Elections), and $30.25 mileage costs for the Board members.

Brunswick and Lenoir counties reported no additional costs for the recount. Lenoir County has iVotronic Voting Equipment, and officials say "it took a morning to run everything through and the board members to be here. Board members are paid monthly in Lenoir County, so it was not an additional meeting and cost for the board members."

Here is a county-by-county breakdown of the costs (as supplied by the NC State Board of Elections):

Bladen County                  $1,320
Brunswick County                    $0
Columbus County             $2,596
Cumberland County          $1,200
Duplin County                   $1,500
Hoke County                        $850
Johnston County              $4,500
Lenoir County                          $0
New Hanover County       $3,275
Pender County                    $355
Robeson County           no report
Sampson County              $2,500

Total                               $18,096

Rouzer's campaign called for the recount after he finished 655 votes behind McIntyre in the vote caucus.

"With the vote margin less than two tenths of one percent, this was the closest Congressional race in the country and voters deserved to know that the vote count was accurate," said Jessica Wood, a spokesperson for the Rouzer campaign.
