Columbus Co. commissioners discuss adding extra officers to schools
COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Columbus County commissioners decide to meet with Whiteville City school board members and Columbus County school board members regarding extra officers to the school system.
According to commission chairman Charles McDowell, the county clerk is going to set up a meeting with all boards. McDowell says he believes the meeting will likely be in February.
Groups will meet to discuss how to fund additional school resource officers.
Sheriff Chris Batten says if schools approve extra officers, it would take a while because he would have to hire nine new deputies. Batten also tells us, they would have to buy vehicles for the deputies.
Commissioners say extra officers could cost more than $200,000.
Right now middle and high schools in Columbus County have school resource officers.
