Leaders are paying millions of dollars for a new city hall building.
SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) – The future of a historic building in
downtown Southport is up in the air after city leaders voted to buy a new
building for city hall.
Aldermen in Southport voted 4-2 to buy the property located
at 1029 N. Howe Street. The building will be used to house all departments
along with city hall staff.
A number of locals were hoping city leaders would keep city
hall in its current building because of the history behind it.
Right now, city leaders are in the process of doing their
due diligence on the new building that will cost the city about $1.8 million
dollars.
City leaders did not know when the closing date on the building
will be but said they hope to be in the new building by mid February.
As for the current city hall, leaders plan to make the
necessary repairs to the roof and to remove the mold in the building.
Aldermen plan to put a committee together that will help
determine the future of the historic building.
