SURF CITY, NC (WECT) – Surf City Police have identified the suspect who robbed the Tsunami Surf Shop in Surf City on Jan. 12 at approximately 3:12 a.m.
Reportedly, the suspect stole about $700 and merchandise from the store. Active warrants were issued for 18-year-old Matthew Grant Eyster of Hampstead, according to police.
Eyster was charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, injury to personal property, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Eyster was charged and released from the Pender County Jail on a $16,000 bond.
According to Surf City Police, the suspect entered the business from an air conditioning duct on the roof of the business falling approximately 30 feet through the air conditioning duct, onto a metal display rack with a glass plate on the top of the rack. The glass plate and metal rack were shattered due to the suspect falling on the rack.
"It's amazing he walked out of there from the height of the fall he had taken," said Deputy Chief, Ron Shanahan of the Surf City Police Department. "In my twenty years on the Surf City Police Department - I've never seen anything like it."
Surf City Police has video surveillance of unidentified suspects walking around the interior of the store. The suspect appears to be limping on the in-store camera images as a result of falling through the roof.
The suspect exited the store via the back door at 3:28 a.m., activating the in-store alarm system.
