NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – While some may dread the
trip to court for a fine or infraction, District Attorney Bed David greets the
traffic court crowds with words of thanks.
"You save my prosecutors the time to try rapists, murders
and drug dealers," said David.
Friday's session included about 1,110 cases, which David considers typical. He let people sitting in
the way back know that they should be done in 25 minutes.
David said the fast-paced process saves time for the
offenders as well. He told the shuffling and seat-shifting masses that proper
paperwork should be enough for most cases.
"Statistically, 99% of
you are just trying to keep this from going on your record," he said.
Everyone has the opportunity to have his or her case heard
before a judge. A handful of stragglers waited even longer to see Judge Rebecca
Blackmore this Friday. Most of those cases are continued to a later date,
bringing the accused right back to court.
