RALEIGH, NC (WECT/AP) - Gunfire erupted at a big gun show at North Carolina's state fairgrounds in what officials are calling an accidental shooting.

It happened Saturday at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show, a quarterly event that usually draws thousands of people to the fairgrounds in Raleigh.

According to a news release from a state agriculture department spokesperson, at about 1:15 p.m., a patron of the show, 36-year-old Gary Lynn Wilson of Wilmington, approached the entrance to the Jim Graham Building to have his shotgun checked out before going inside.

The gun was in a case, and as Wilson tried to open it for inspection, the gun accidentally discharged.

Three people were injured, including 54-year-old Janet Hoover of Benson, 50-year-old Linwood Hester of Durham and 54-year-old Deputy Jake Alderman of Wake Forest, who is a retired Wake County Sheriff's deputy who was working at the show.

Alderman was treated at a nearby hospital and released, while Hoover and Hester are being treated at a hospital. Their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

The fairground is operated by the state agriculture department. Agency spokesman Brian Long said the shotgun's owner brought the weapon to the show to find a private buyer.

The show shut down early Saturday. It will continue Sunday as planned, but no private gun sales will be allowed, and personal guns will not be allowed on property.

Gun sales will only be permitted by licensed dealers inside of the Jim Graham Building.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
