LELAND, NC (WECT) - If you were driving over the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Saturday afternoon and you saw a plume of smoke in the distance, don't worry, it was supposed to be there.

Leland firefighters burned down a structure off of Highway 17 as part of their training. They started at 9 a.m., doing everything from learning hose techniques to putting out a blaze.

Officials say they don't have a lot of massive fires, so it's good practice for newcomers.

"The new guys, they don't get to see fires like these unless it's actual fire," said assistant chief, Ronnie Hayes. "These are few and far between so we like to take advantage of them."

Hayes says the structure used to be a motel, and then an old apartment complex.
