Brunswick County, NC - (WECT) - Saturday was a somber day in Brunswick County as officers, friends and the family of Detective Kyle Jones gathered to honor him.
Jones passed away earlier this week at the age of 41. He served citizens of Columbus County from 1994 to 2000, and then those in Brunswick County until he passed away.
"He was the rock of the department," said Chief Mose Highsmith, of the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.
"He was that guy, that guy who could always bring a smile to your face, he will be missed," said Sgt. Bart Long.
Friends say the husband and father was courageous, kind, and that he would do anything for anyone, even leading fundraising efforts when a colleague was diagnosed with cancer.
"He was a friend, someone I could call and talk to," said Long.
Jones also loved NASCAR and was a bit of a prankster.
"He was the one everybody joked with," said Long.
"I heard one story, that the department was waiting for an important call, so Kyle super glued all of the phones shut. I guess everyone was mad at first, but you could never stay mad at Kyle long," said Highsmith.
His death on Monday came as a surprise, and his loss will be felt by many.
"The department and the community was a better place because of him," said Highsmith.
