WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) – The 5th annual Cold Stroke Classic drew more than 100 athletes to this year's stand-up paddle board race/event. The event took place in front of the Blockade Runner hotel in Wrightsville Beach.
The field of competitors included paddlers as young as 13 years to as experienced as 64. Paddlers were broken into groupings by level of experience (recreation and elite). The race required paddlers to paddle around Harbor Island once, while paddlers in the elite division circled the island twice.
Water temperature was frigid, but paddlers were thrilled with race conditions. Those that competed in last year's event referenced the treacherous conditions from a year ago when rescue crews were called upon on to save numerous paddlers throughout the day.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to SUP Clean Up, an organization dedicated to the cleaning of and preservation of local beaches/oceans, waterways and marsh land.
