BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) - According to records released by the Bladen County jail Friday, more inmates were hospitalized in 2012 from fights than the previous three years combined.
Eight inmates last year had to be transported to the hospital as a result of incidents inside the jail; however, only six inmates required hospitalization between 2009 and 2011.
An additional 28 assaults were reported from the past two years. That number is up from seven reported assaults between 2009-2010.
Joshua Ward was assaulted in the Bladen County Jail in Jan. and David Gilchrist is the fourth person charged in the assault, according to a news release.
David Gilchrist along with Mathue Johnson, age 18, Twasjay Brown, age 19, and Darryl Simmons, age 33, have been charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury and second degree kidnapping.
Gilchrist's age is unknown at this time.
Officials say Ward sustained injuries to his head and chest area. He was transported to Bladen County Hospital and later transferred to NHRMC.
So far, a motive has not been identified.
Authorities say that Brown has been in the jail since July 2011 on the following charges:
His bond was set at $55,000.
Johnson has been in the jail since Oct. 2012 on the following charges:
His bond was set at $115,500.
Simmons has been in the jail since Monday on the following charges:
His bond was set at $2,500.
