WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Organizers with the NC Azalea Festival announced Friday that Lynyrd Skynyrd will be part of the 2013 concert line up.
The southern rock group formed in Jacksonville Florida in the 1960s and has had several chart-topping hits, including Sweet Home Alabama, Free Bird, and Travelin' Man.
A plane crash in 1977 put an abrupt end to the group's success as three band members were killed. They took a ten year hiatus before reuniting for a full-scale tour in 1987 and began recording again.
Lynyrd Skynyrd will be the Thursday night concert for the 2013 Azalea Festival, performing Thursday, April 11.
Azalea Festival organizers recently announced the concerts will move from Trask Coliseum at UNCW to the Front Street parking lot adjacent to CFCC's Schwartz Center.
Organizers said this venue will allow for more people to attend with lower ticket prices. The new venue will be able to hold about 3,000-5,000 more guests.
The Avett Brothers are also part of the concert line up and will perform Friday, April 12.
Tickets are $40 and will be on sale beginning at 9:00 Saturday morning online. They will be available at the ticket office on Oleander starting Monday.
