WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Dr. Greg Brannon from Cary is challenging US Senator Kay Hagan and kicked off his campaign in Wilmington Wednesday.

The next election is almost two years away, but the Republican said he needs the time to spread his message.

Brannon said he's active in the Tea Party and considers himself a "constitutional conservative." He's not interested in playing party politics and wants to get back to the foundation principles of the country and the rule of the law.

"Our constitution is the rule of law," said Brannon. "Every elected official swears to uphold the constitution and then when they're in power, they run away from it. There's no more of that."

Incumbent Senator Kay Hagan, a Democrat, has already announced her plans to run for reelection.
