PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Pender County Representative Chris Millis isn't wasting time when it comes to pushing out bills.

The newcomer took the spot of 10-year veteran Representative Carolyn Justice and has no problem getting down to business.

"She definitely has a tremendous theoretical shoe size, and I'm doing my best to fill them," said Millis. "It is my job to do exactly what I said I was going to do, that's what I'm there for."

Within his first week on the job, Millis showed support for a bill that allows people with conceal and carry permits to take guns inside restaurants as long as the business doesn't have signs against it.

Millis argues law-abiding citizens should be able to protect themselves.

"Right now, people who have, and comply with, the conceal and carry permit don't have the ability to dine in a restaurant that may serve alcohol like a Chili's or an Applebee's and be able to protect themselves," explained Millis. "[This] bill gives them the liberty to do so."

While in office, Millis plans to focus on several issues, including illegal immigration. He's already supported several bills, including one that bans government contracts with companies that employ illegal immigrants.

"If you think about tax payer dollars being used to employ people who aren't citizens - to me that's a fundamental flaw," said Millis. "I think we owe it to our citizens to make sure the dollars from their pockets are going to actual us citizens."

While the response has varied, Millis said he'll continue to listen to his constituents and act on their behalf.

"Of course you can't please everybody, so some responses have been good some have not been good," said Millis.

In the future, the representative said he'll focus on issues like funding for dredging, regulatory reform and tax reform.
