RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – Senator Bill Rabon of Brunswick County is one of three primary sponsors of a bill that could raise the speed limit to 75 miles per hour on some interstates in North Carolina.

SB 709 would give the Department of Transportation the leeway to raise the speed limit from the current maximum of 70 mph, if it is found to be "reasonable and safe under the conditions found to exist" on that section of the interstate.

Rep. Neal Hunt (R-Wake) and Rep. Kathy Harrington (R-Gaston) are the other two primary sponsors.

The bill was introduced on Tuesday, and has not yet been sent to a committee. Click here to read the full text of the bill.
