RALEIGH, NC (AP) - The Senate has again narrowly passed legislation allowing local governments in some North Carolina counties to use their own web sites to post required legal notices instead of local newspaper advertisements.

The chamber voted 26-22 Tuesday for legislation sought by many local officials but fought by the North Carolina Press Association. The Senate approved the measure by a nearly identical margin Monday. It now goes to the House.

Wake, Mecklenburg and Guilford are among 10 counties and most municipalities within those counties to receive the online option for things like public hearings and delinquent taxpayer lists.

Some municipalities already had the option.

Supporters say it will help governments save money and promotes efficiency. Smaller newspapers argue readers depend on them for the notices. They'd also lose a stream of revenue.
