WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A gas line cut near the back of Ashley High School has been fixed, according to Battalion Chief Michael Pinson with NHC Fire and Rescue.

There was a soccer game or practice going on when a gas line was accidentally hit. Players were taken off the field as crews worked to fix the line.

Steven Green's daughter was one of the soccer players evacuated, and he says he saw volunteers assembling a tent for the Relay For Life event scheduled for Friday.

He says organizers were setting up tents by driving metal stakes into the ground, when all of a sudden, he heard a large "pop" noise. When he turned to look, he saw gas going straight up.

Pinson confirms that a four inch pipe line was struck when Relay for Life crews were setting up their tent for tomorrow's event.

Pinson says crews checked the area and there is no gas readings in the area or in the school.

He says this should not affect Friday's Relay for Life event.
