NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Firefighters in our area spent their Saturday afternoon learning how to better protect you and your home.

Hundreds of firefighters from all across the state attended the 30th Annual New Hanover County Firefighters Association Fire College at CFCC's North Campus.

Those who attended received hands on training in several area aimed at keeping people safe in case of an emergency.

Firefighter focused on safety training, ventilation, fire attack, and forced entry.

Organizers say its very important to focus on technique rather than speed.  Fire officials want to make sure that firefighters across the state are all on the same page.

Mike Whitwam is an organizer.

"It's good to have a mixture of both seasoned guys and the rookies," said Whitwam.  "The seasoned guys can come in with techniques they've learned over the years that may help some of the younger guys who have never seen that technique being done before."

New Hanover County Fire and Rescue will hold a similar type of training in the next couple months.
