COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A jury found Elijah Jones guilty of first degree murder Thursday for a deadly shooting in 2011. He was sentenced to life in prison.
Police say Jones shot his estranged wife, Joan Everatte, and her new boyfriend Bobby Ray Shipman. Everatte was killed at the scene, and Shipman was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities say Jones turned himself into the courthouse shortly after the incident.
According to police, Jones and Everatte had domestic issues leading up to the shooting.
After opening statements, Everatte's daughter took the witness stand. Jones was the first witness Monday for the defense.Closing arguments wrapped up Wednesday and the jury began deliberations Thursday.
