Protestors stand up against genetically modified food

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of protestors marched the streets of downtown Wilmington on Saturday to stand up against a big company that produces genetically modified food.

Wilmington is one of 250 cities across the country where protests are happening against seed giant Monsanto.

"March Against Monsanto" organizers say they're calling attention to the dangers posed by genetically modified food and the companies that produce it.

Genetically modified plants come from seeds that are made to resist herbicides and insecticides.

Critics say they can lead to health problems and harm the environment.

Roxanne Kirtright was an organizer for the protest in Wilmington.

"I think what they're doing is wrong and I think it's a shame," said Kirtright. "I think people need to be able to keep their families safe and I think the food needs to be safe."

There is growing awareness and concern regarding GMO crops and organisms.

Many countries have already burned GMO crops and banned Monsanto seeds.

On Friday, the Senate rejected a bill that would allow states to decide if genetically modified food products should be labeled.
