Man charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Detectives have arrested a man and charged him with several counts of assault and possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
Authorities arrested James Lavorne Hewett Friday night for a fight involving his parents and brother two days earlier.
The fight happened at a home on Ervin T. Richardson Rd. in Nakina. Hewett was shot in the hand when his brother tried to disarm him.
At the hospital, Hewett assaulted two deputies while being treated. His mother was treated for a head injury, after she said Hewett pushed her down the door steps. She was released from the hospital on Thursday.
Hewett was booked into the Columbus County Detention Center with a $225,000 bond.
He faces several charges including: assault on a female, assault by pointing a gun, two counts of assault on an officer and three counts of possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
