House approves Medicaid fix, gives McCrory spending options

Posted: Updated:

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina lawmakers have given Gov. Pat McCrory's administration power to spend up to $450 million to address a growing Medicaid shortfall this fiscal year and pay to clean up a previous accounting decision made to narrow an old budget gap.

The House agreed unanimously Wednesday to the Senate version of the bill authorizing the spending from unexpended state funds and a projected tax surplus. The bill now heads to
McCrory's desk to be signed into law.

The projected shortfall through June 30 has more than doubled since earlier this month to $330 million - a result McCrory's Department of Health and Human Services blames on mistakes when Beverly Perdue was governor.

The money will also cover $118 million for an outstanding drug rebate to the federal government.
