Johnson out as Monroe's track coach

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

LaToyia Johnson is no longer the boys' and girls' track coach at Monroe after two seasons.

Johnson confirmed to WALB this morning she is no longer with the school as a teacher or a coach.

When asked for a reason, Johnson declined comment.

"I'm not going to discuss my personal life at this point," Johnson told WALB.

She also refused to do an on-camera interview.

Monroe Athletic Director Charles Truitt says Johnson resigned at the end of the school year to take another opportunity closer to home.

"Coach Johnson did a great job for us the last couple of years, coaching our boys and girls track team," Truitt says.  "But she had an opportunity to get closer to home, and she took advantage of that. And we're going to miss her, because she did a good job with our kids."

Truitt says the search for Johnson's replacement has already begun. He says whoever is hired will have big shoes to fill, coaching one of the state's traditional track powers.

He says they will be looking within and outside the program.

"Coach Johnson did a great job with our program, but we also had two other coaches who have done an extremely good job to work together. So we have some guys that are on staff now that we feel can do the job also," Truitt says. "But we're going to look out and find the best candidate to fill the position to keep the tradition going."

Johnson led the Lady Tornadoes to their fourth straight state championship in her first season as head coach.

In 2013, Monroe's girls' team finished tied for fourth in the state. The boys finished in 11th place.
