TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
A man lost control of his van on Alexis Road and plowed through some shrubbery, taking out a pole and crashing into a motel.
This all happened on Sunday at the Crown Inn Motel.
Rochelle Watson was sleeping until she got a rude awakening. Debris came raining down on Rochelle. Her boyfriend was in the bathroom.
She remembers telling the driver to shut off the engine because the room was filling up with fumes and she was worried the van would explode. However, the shirtless man jumped out of the van and fled the scene of the wreck.
Motel workers say Toledo police caught the man in the parking lot of a nearby Kmart. He was Thomas Wallace, a suspect in the murder of a Temperance man late last year.
Wallace was free on bond, awaiting his trial. He has since been charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
Rochelle said she feels lucky to be alive because God was on her side.
"I didn't know what to think. I thought I was dreaming. Thought I was dreaming. But at the same time I was scared. Trying to get up. It was crazy. Something off the TV. Never thought it would happen to us," added Watson.
