WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Being able to get to fires faster is all about putting firefighters in strategic locations.

To accomplish this goal, the Wilmington Fire Department will be moving four fire stations into two larger centralized locations. Officials with the WFD said the goal is to put responders in more strategic locations while doing all the necessary updates with a new facility.

"The current facilities we are looking to consolidate into the two new facilities aren't handicap accessible, energy efficient or big enough for all the vehicles and equipment," said David Hines with the WFD.

Stations included in this change are Station #3 on Princess Place Drive, Station #4 on Wallace Drive, Station #5 Wellington Avenue and Station #6 on Carolina Beach Road.

The new, centralized and up-to-date facilities will be on Cinema Drive and on Shipyard Boulevard near Carolina Beach Road.

The determination was made these were the best new locations based on data that showed where the highest call volume came from.

Each new station will cost between $2.2 and $2.8 million based on how bids come back and city council approval.

Construction could begin as soon as the start of the new year.
