RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – The North Carolina Association of Educators plans to look at legal challenges against the new budget deal agreed on by House and Senate leaders.

In a letter to the General Assembly, NCAE  President Rodney Ellis blasts the $20.6 billion plan as a way to "position our state as the model in what not to do in education".

Ellis specifically mentions "elimination of class size caps", the "firing of thousands of teacher assistants" and the "investment in a private school voucher scheme" as main concerns. His letter suggests tenure, taxpayer dollars for private and for-profit schools, and not providing a quality teacher in every classroom as the issues the NCAE will challenge legally.

"This budget will ensure that we will rank at the very bottom in our commitment to public education and professional educators." Ellis wrote in the letter.  "Today, you are placing a sign on each school's door that says ‘quality educators need not apply."

Senate President Pro Tempore said in a news release announcing the deal that the plan "..smartly invests in key priorities like education.."   The bill does cut education spending in North Carolina by nearly $260 million in its first year and another $222 million in 2014.
