First phase of Perrysburg riverfront project proposed to council

PERRYSBURG, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Perrysburg riverfront project started as an accumulation of ideas. Now the parks and recreation committee has decided they will advice city council to vote through what they're calling phase one of the project.

"Originally, I thought it was quite visionary," said resident Sandra Jane Heard. "I mean, I love the whole aspect of having a downtown community area where everyone can gather."

But with a price tag of $26 million, the Perrysburg parks and recreation committee has decided to take everything one step at a time.

"By simplifying it and starting with the backbones - as everyone's called it - the riverfront walk way, makes a lot of sense for the taxpayers," said Councilman Todd Grayson. "It makes a lot of sense for people in town who want to get access to the river, and I think that's what that first phase will do."

So the committee is starting small, and will ask city council to approve putting in a multi-use path. The path would connect Ft. Meigs to Orleans, to Riverside, and then Hood Park.

The idea of a new trail has some residents excited.

"I think we owe it to the residents of this community to have access to the river," said Heard. "I don't mean direct access into the river, I mean a nature walk. I mean a way of interacting with this beautiful, natural preserve we have down there."

And while others aren't completely opposed to the idea, they say they would rather see things stay the way they are.

"There just aren't that many areas along the river anymore that people do have access to," said resident Diane Bishop.

Council will make its decision Tuesday night.
