East Columbus High to honor deceased couple

According to principal Bobby Vaughan, they hardly missed a home sporting event. COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Administrators at a local high school plan to honor a couple from Columbus County, killed in a car crash.

George and Betty Theodorakis died Thursday, after investigators say George lost control of their car and struck a tree in Onslow County.

According to family members their son Michael who's 40 was in the car with them. They tell us, he has a broken leg and is recovering at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. 

The couple lived in Lake Waccamaw. Hearts are heavy there, especially at East Columbus High School.

According to principal Bobby Vaughan, they hardly missed a home sporting event. Vaughan says, the two were so passionate about sports at the school, they will honor the couple during halftime of the next home game. 

"They had so much enthusiasm you thought they were still students at East Columbus High School. You could tell they felt every play that was made. They felt the heart aches when something went wrong. The jubilation when something went right. That's what I'm going to miss the most the look in their eyes," Vaughan said.

Administrators at East Columbus say, they also plan to honor Michael Neely, a former graduate who recently died in a motorcycle crash. His father Robin Neely was a longtime coach at the school.
